a male homosexual. This now-dated form has survived in theatrical and film usage from more widespread earlier currency in the argot of the underworld, tramps, tink-ers, etc. It is a portmanteau comprising omi (man) and polone (woman). The word was used as a euphemism in the radio comedy series Round the Horne during the 1960s.
